GTA 6 Scams to Avoid: Fake Beta Keys, 'PC Pre-Orders,' and Phishing Sites
A scam wave hit with GTA VI pre-orders. There's no beta, no mobile version, and no PC pre-order — here's how to spot the fraud and buy safely.
Overview
What this guide is for
The excitement around Grand Theft Auto VI's pre-orders brought a wave of scams with it. Security researchers flagged a surge of fake 'beta access,' bogus 'PC pre-order keys,' free-code generators, and phishing sites the week pre-orders opened. The good news: the rules for staying safe are simple, because most of these scams sell things that don't exist. Here's how to tell fraud from the real thing.
The red flags: things that simply don't exist
The easiest way to spot a GTA VI scam is that most of them sell products Rockstar hasn't made. If a site offers any of these, it's fraud — no exceptions.
Use a two-minute check before clicking: compare the domain with the official store address, open the listing from the console store search rather than an ad, and stop if the seller asks for a login, recovery code, crypto payment or a payment outside the storefront. A real retailer can sell a boxed code, but it will not need your PSN, Xbox or Rockstar password to do so.
- A 'GTA 6 beta' or 'early access' — there is no public beta.
- A 'GTA 6 PC pre-order' or 'PC key' — the game is console-only at launch.
- A 'GTA 6 mobile' download — it doesn't exist.
- 'Free GTA 6' code generators or giveaways — these harvest logins and card details.
Where it's actually safe to buy
Keep purchases to official channels. Everything else is a risk.
- PlayStation Store (PS5) and Microsoft Store (Xbox Series X|S).
- Rockstar's own store, and authorized retailers for a boxed 'code in a box' copy.
- See our pre-order guide for the full list of legitimate options.
How to protect yourself
A few habits keep you safe through launch season, when scams spike again.
- Never enter your PSN, Xbox, or Rockstar login on a third-party 'reward' or 'generator' site.
- Ignore social media DMs and comments promising codes — Rockstar doesn't distribute keys that way.
- Check the URL: phishing sites imitate official domains with small misspellings.
